Young Leaders of Orange County (YLOC) has been widely recognized as an organization composed of approximately 60 high school students who dedicate their time to serving the community by providing free math tutoring for younger students. Helen Youn, the current president of YLOC, established YLOC in December 2011 with the support of Buena Park city council members. When YLOC was first established in December 2011, its first mission was to provide free math tutoring for Buena Park district students from grades three to eight. The volunteers are from grades 8 through 11, and they come from various schools. YLOC representative states, “Through our tutoring, we would like to be able to truly give back to the community.”
Since December 2011, YLOC members have worked hard to achieve their first mission. The members have given up their time to be responsible for their students every Saturday from 1:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. Moreover, the members’ parents contributed to the cause and helped during the sessions. Hye Jin Shin, a parent of aYLOC volunteer tutor stated, “YLOC has surprised my daughter and myself how a group of high school students can create such rewarding changes and memories.” Similarly, Reina, YLOC tutor who is currently in 9th grade, stated, “It takes effort and dedication to come every Saturday for three hours, but I am grateful to be able to make a small change for others.”
YLOC successfully achieved its first mission and has proudly ended its first tutoring semester on June 9, 2012. This day was dedicated to recognizing the tutors, the students, the parents, and the sponsors that made this program possible. YLOC members stated that they had learned so much through the program and wish to continue being a part of YLOC.
