8/30/10 — Yorba Linda City Council recognized and awarded this year’s Volunteens on August 19 at a special ceremony at City Hall.
“After all the hard work we have done, it felt good to be recognized,” Tim Park,a freshman student at El Dorado High School, said.
The award ceremony honored about 30 students in the 2010 Summer Volunteen Program, which selects several high school students from June 28 to Aug. 20 to assist with Yorba Linda’s recreational activities for kids. This program provides teenagers the opportunity to be involved with their community and to interact with children. Volunteens were selected after an application process including an interview and a letter of recommendation.
Volunteens came to the ceremony with their parents and staff from their workplaces such as Adventure Playground, Tiny Tots, and the Yorba Linda City Office. Recreation Coordinator Tony Brescini presented the awards, recognizing the Volunteens’ hard work and commitment. Each student completed 180 to 230 hours during the summer.
While the City of Yorba Linda benefited from the students’ service, so did the students.
“This summer has been too good to be true,” Camille Caliolio from Yorba Linda High School, said. “I will always remember the skills and responsibilities I learned.”
The students were awarded monetary scholarships based on performance evaluations and the number of hours worked. Other benefits included a letter of recommendation, employment experience and community service hours toward graduation.
“I hope to volunteer for the city of Yorba Linda again next year,” Sean Zulueta, a junior at El Dorado High School, said.
