On Sunday May 27, the San Antonio Spurs won the first game of the Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder with a 3-point difference of 101-98. The Spurs continued their winning streak of 19 games and are still undefeated in the playoffs. Spurs fans around the country are ecstatic about the Spurs’ chance to advance to the NBA Finals. “It doesn’t matter who they play against, Spurs are going all the way,” said Samuel Yoon, a pastor at Irvine Baptist Church.
It was an all-around stunner of a game, with plenty of highlight-reel moments and flashy moves from the players. Two of the more notable athletes of the night, Manu Ginobli and Kevin Durant performed beyond expectations. Ginobli, the veteran shooting guard from the Spurs, led his team in scoring with 26 points and 5 assists. The Thunder’s superstar, Durant, had 27 points from the game, and also 10 rebounds to contribute to his team.
Despite leading by 9 points at the end of the third quarter, the Thunder could not seal a victory due to a lack of defense and the Spurs out-scored the Thunder’s 27 points. Perhaps it was due to the home court advantage the Spurs had, but the Thunder just could not seem to close the game favorably. “I don’t know, the Thunder seemed like they lost it in the last quarter. They didn’t do as well as they’ve been doing in the playoffs,” said Phillip Kasko, a freshman at Beckman High.
With the Spurs’ win in the West, attention is now drawn to the Eastern Conference Finals, where the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat will face off in their first game on Monday, May 28.
As for the Spurs, things seem to be in their favor, as they start off the Western Conference Finals with an auspicious lead against the Thunder, 1-0.
Great sports writing. You are obviously an expert in this field of writing. Concise.
Things to maybe improve on – more active picture(s) and the quote from the pastor was quite random. Maybe you could have explained how he is a basketball fanatic or expert or something so I know that I can take him seriously and credibly. I don’t know if you were on summer break when you wrote this, but if you were still in school, it would have been good to interview a basketball player or coach at your school, to make it more relevant and credible.
(The game between the Celtics and Miami Heat was such a good game. I was biting my fingernails the whole time.)
Thanks for the feedback, I’ll be sure to incorporate it next time! And yeah the game was great! Glad to see you appreciate sports, thanks for your comment!
great job! In addition to blessing’s comment, try to get a more diverse representation of people’s views. For example, target people of different age groups, or people who feel a certain way about the Spurs, etc.
Also, be sure to make your article more than just a score report. Make it lively, make it fun!
Overall, excellent work. A thoroughly enjoyable piece.
