After two years, the long-awaited official release of “Avatar: The Legend of Korra” will occur tomorrow at 11 am on Nickelodeon. The creators of the series, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, created “Korra” as a sequel to “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” “The Legend of Korra” revolves around a young girl named Korra, who is the new Avatar. Like its prequel, “The Legend of Korra” takes place in a world where “benders,” people who can manipulate at least one of the four basic elements (Water, Earth, Fire, and Air) , and regular humans coexist. However, “The Legend of Korra” happens 70 years after the original series, when the Four Nations of the world are at peace. The protagonist, Korra, is the new Avatar, a bender who can utilize all four elements to maintain the balance between the Four Nations.
Due to the popularity of “ATLA” (a fan acronym for “Avatar: The Last Airbender”), the creators of the show wished to change the plot’s former direction, so as not to make the same show. Before, the former Avatar, Aang, had to learn all four elements to save the world from a despot. In the sequel, Korra has already learned three elements, and only needs to master airbending. Additionally, she now has to face against anti-benders called Equalists, who oppose bending and use chi-blocking (an ability that disables muscle movement and bending) to achieve their goals. “The Legend of Korra” will also mainly take place in Republic City, a metropolis that the previous Avatar and Fire Lord established.
The series will be darker than its prequel. It will show how the conflict between progress and nature affects the Four Nations and the Avatar. Moreover, although Korra’s previous Avatar incarnation Aang detested violence, Korra pro-bends, a sport where teams of benders battle against each other, and fights crime with her friends, Mako and Bolin.
Most fans of “ATLA” are excited and anticipate the series with joy. Arthur Tapia, a junior from Santa Fe High School, stated, “I’m absolutely ecstatic, I think it will [be] as good if not better than the original.” “The Legend of Korra” was highly publicized through the internet and its website, KorraNation. Through various promotional clips, it became clear that the series would be action oriented and headed by strong female heroine. Because it is a different approach to an old series, other fans are awaiting judgment. Elianne Melendez, a senior at Santa Fe High School, argues, “‘Korra’ will never truly compare because people already have their ideas about post-“ATLA”. People wanted things to go a certain way, but honestly, I think it will be good.”
Readers can watch the vaunted series tomorrow on Nickelodeon, or if the one day wait may seem too harsh, KorraNation has released the first two episodes on the Internet.
Considering the fact I haven’t seen animations recently, this was an interesting article to look into. It opened my eyes in the world of animations 🙂 You might want to add more detail about the background or plot regarding the movie/animation for people (including me) who do not know anything about this genre. After reading this article, though, I might just go watch it!
It’s a very good show. I did not watch it until the actual release date, so I had to go off of info from facebook and tumblr. But anyways, I hope it was good for you if you watched it! ^^
