These days, the number of people who die of lack of exercise is similar to that die of disease related to smoking, and increase of obesity in kids are closely related to lack of exercise. Despite these research results, teenagers today do not exercise enough.
Accoriding to some highschools and students in GyeongKi Do, students usually go to academies on the weekend as five-day schoolweekbegan. They said that they have more than 10 hours of class, which prevents them from exercising as they become too tired. Also, as years of highschool are much busier than that of other schoolyears, the less time high school students have to study. Accordingly, fatter 3rd year high school students are more notified in fact.
Lots of parents provide from health food to late-night meal which show off enormous amount of calories and force students to sit on the chair to save time.
S highschool 1st year student Lee said ”I felt that exercising is desperate when I came to high school. I put on weight about 7kg for 5 months and now, my skirts do not fit.” Other students complained “ Friends are crying enough. There are no time left for even stretching after eating a meal, brushing teeth and preparing for class. And it makes us cry that we cannot stretch in class though. If we miss a meal to lose weight, we cannot stand for all day because we do not have any energy.”
Cafeterias in school also contribute to insufficient exercise of students. MBC TV news stated that 90 percent of Korean students go to the cafeteria more than one time a day. Students visit that when breaktime, meal time, and extra time are available. It deprives the time to exercise and makes the exercise they did useless.
School physical Education class would be the same. There are many people including teachers that PE class help students to heal their minds and bodies tired by studying hard. However, they are under the false impression. In fact, in A high school in Seoul, 50 percentof students just chat sitting on the floor of gym and 10 percent even take a nap on the floor and 20 percent play game themselves. Only 20 percent play basketball, badminton or ping pong. PE class literally becomes students’ rest time so that it cannot be helpful to students’ health at all.
Furthermore, there are many students attending schools which do not have schoolyards. Seoul Education Official in-local reported that students whose schools are equipped with playground apprarently are lack of exercise. Specifically, their exercise time 157 minutes while students whose schools have schoolyard exercise for 208 minutes a day.
Students in Korea are lack of exercise and many are concerned that saying “Studying is important but securing enough exercise time is more important for student”.
