On September 24th, Santa Margarita Catholic High School hosted its 20th annual South Orange County Model United Nations (SOCOMUN) Conference. With over 900 students from over 20 schools from all over Orange County, SOCOMUN XX was an enormous success. This year’s theme for the conference was “Learning from the past, Leading the future,” and the conference did an excellent job allowing students to learn about significant issues at an international scale.
Model United Nations (MUN) is a forensic activity that allows students to speak and debate about global issues, such as Nuclear Proliferation, State Sponsored Terrorism, and Women in Armed Conflict. Students play the role of a delegate from various countries, and based on the country’s policy and stance on a certain issue, the student is expected to propose solutions to solve important problems that plague today’s world.
SOCOMUN’s purpose was to allow novice delegates to learn what Model United Nations is, and individual committees had trained chairs and secretaries that helped lead the novice delegates through a typical MUN conference. Ariana Mozafari, the chair for Historical Security Council, which debated the topic of Iran Hostage Crisis and Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan, said “It was awesome to see all the novice delegates getting involved, and it was amazingly fun too!”
The SOCOMUN Conference was a fun and interacting way of learning global and historical issues for all the delegates. Every year, Santa Margarita Catholic High School strives to make the conference the best learning conference it can be.
