Psy doing his famous “horse-riding” dance
Logging nearly 13 million views just two weeks after it was posted on Youtube, Psy’s new song “Gangnam Style” has been a big hit not only in South Korea but also in America, Thailand, and in other countries as well. With its unique horse-riding dance and techno backbeat, “Gangnam Style” is even popular among people who do not understand its lyrics at all. “Gangnam Style” reaction videos online have also been wildly popular, with some reaching over 350,000 views.
“Gangnam Style” films Psy as he walks around Gangnam, a district in Korea, doing eccentric things like tanning next to a children’s playground and blowing up a bomb behind two grandpas. The song itself is about Psy’s “perfect girlfriend,” a girl who is quiet and refined in the day but is crazy and wild at night.
Born in Seoul, Psy attended college in America at Boston University and the Berklee College of Music, where he studied music. He returned to South Korea and debuted his first album in 2001, in which he was fined for using inappropriate language. After almost a decade of general unpopularity, he was signed into YG Entertainment in 2010, and currently is topping charts with the first part of his new album, “Psy 6,” his sixth album, particularly the song “Gangnam Style,” released on July 15, 2012.
“Gangnam Style” has received much acclaim throughout the world of modern music artists. T-Pain, a well-known auto-tune rapper, tweeted, “Words cannot even describe how amazing this video is…” This video has also been featured on many newspapers, such as LA Times and the Huffington Post, and also on news programs like CNN, all praising its uniqueness and popularity.
Psy’s new album also features many popular K-pop artists in South Korea, such as G-dragon, Youn Do-hyun, and others. While Psy was popular for his live concerts in South Korea for his stand-up comedy-like actions, this marks the first time he has been so popularly featured in America.
HAHa! I also loved this music video! I liked the topic. However, some of your sentences seem too abrupt. I think you can use a bit more transitional words and sentences.
I LOVE gangnam style!! it would have been better if you mentioned that there are other parodies of this song made by netizens, like hongdae style, busan style and daegu style..
It was really well written. However, I thought it would be much better if the transitions between his “history” and the music video were less sudden.
Oh god. Haha I see this everywhere now! Uhm i think that it would have been more interesting to read more feedback from big celebrities, like you said T Pain. But good article!
I LOVE this song (: Your article seems nice and short. However, I agree with what Min Syung said. This article would have been better if you added transition sentences. I can get what you’re trying to say, but because the transitions seem so abrupt and out of place, I feel like it would confuse many readers on what information you’re trying to lead them to.
