National Leadership Honor Society (NLHS), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, is one of California’s first to make leading and providing high school tutors who will aid in the educational development of younger students while developing their own leadership skills in the process. Every Saturday at the Magnet Learning Academy in Irvine, CA, tutors and their tutees come together foster a meaningful and mutually beneficial learning environment.
This organization consists of talented high school students, and it generally offers free tutoring for students who are from 4th to 8th grade and have immigrated to the United States in the past three years or for students with English as a Second Language (ESL). Also, NLHS seeks to assist these students adapt culturally to the United States and train them to become the future leaders of our society.
NLHS offers the highest quality of academic enrichment, including, but not limited to, homework assistance, art, music, debate and other extracurricular activities while maintaining a fun and safe atmosphere for the students. This comprehensive approach allows the organization to provide the highest quality of academically-oriented after-school programs.
“I really want to improve in debate, and I’m really thankful for being able to learn here,” said Paul Kim, a current 6th grader who immigrated to the United States from Korea two years ago. “The classes are really fun, and it’s worth not being able to play with friends on Saturday.”
By participating in NLHS, high school students are also given the ability to exhibit their leadership qualities through areas such as mentoring and tutoring. By aiding their mentees with various subjects, members of NLHS are able to share their talents with the community, and, at the same time, serve as a role model for the younger generation. In addition, as a non-profit organization, members of National Leadership Honors Society organize and plan their own fundraiser to support the program.
“It’s really inspiring to see these students come every week, do all their homework, and express an unending sense of curiosity. I feel like I learn from them as much as they learn from me,” said Steve Kim, one of the high school mentors for NLHS.
By leading a program in which individuality and character can flourish, NLHS strives to inspire their mentees as well as younger students of the community to become charismatic communicators of their ideas and talents and effectively execute their responsibilities with leadership to make a progress for a better change in the world.
