Yorba Linda High School’s Women’s volleyball team under Coach Chavez was successful as they made into the second round for the CIF. On the first round match against Templeton High school, which is in San Luis Obispo, YLHS defeated the Templeton Eagles 3-0. Coach Chavez explains, “We had to leave school at ten o’ clock in the morning on Tuesday. We got up there at four and our match started at six and we beat them.” Traveling more than 250 miles on a bus was a great challenge for the team. “So traveling that long and going from a vegetable on a bus to having to actually fire up and play was definitely a tough transition,” Coach Chavez tells.
On the second round match, YLHS Varsity Volleyball team played Mayfair High School at home and lost to them by a score of 3-2. The tough part about the second round for the team was that there was a football game the same day and the football players were not at the volleyball game to cheer for them. “The football players are by far our best fans”, Coach Chavez tells, “They are loud. They are supportive. And when they are not there, the crowd was… It was definitely tough. Our girls love them out there”.
Coach Chavez compliments five players who she regards as the most memorable players throughout CIF games: Asten Potter, Missy Owens, Katelyn Valor, Taylor Schlenor, and MaKenna Morris. Asten Potter, Katelyn Valor, and Taylor Schlenor made into the first team, and Makenna Morris and Missy Owens made into the second team.
“We lost the first two games but we managed to come back and win the next two and we pushed to five which is awesome”, Coach Chavez is pleased to say, “I was proud of them.”
Coach Chavez strongly believes that there is a bright future for Women’s Volleyball team. Especially since there is currently no senior in the team, she is hopeful that “all of the girls will come back to compete next year.” Coach Chavez praises her Volleyball team, saying, “There is no reason why we can’t definitely get way passed where we were this year.
