Magic: The Gathering, a strategic trading card card game, is celebrating its 20th anniversary. A game requiring out-of-the-box thinking, Magic: The Gathering has attracted players both young and old since its release in 1993.
Although the game may seem incredibly complicated at times, it has simple rules that anyone can follow. Players begin by purchasing starter packs, which contain beginner cards to teach them the game. Anyone who plays Magic can purchase other card packs that expand the gameplay.
“I like to build decks that win in ridiculous ways. Not… just win, but I want to set off something no one has ever seen before, just to prove that I can. I just have a lot of fun with it,” Claremont High School Magic Club president Jacob Smith said.
Magic can also be an opportunity for people to exercise their minds. Thinking strategically is the best way to play the game, as players must be steps ahead of their opponents. They must anticipate what card their opponents will play so that they can defend effectively.
There are many strategic games that exist, but there are not many card games as popular as Magic: The Gathering. Its influence has helped players come together to interact with each other and create an environment of friendly competition.
