December 17, 2010___On television or the Internet, in newspapers or magazines, the media influences everyone, both students and adults. It is important for students to learn about journalism and current events from an early age. It will help them to be more aware of the world around them through history and present issues because they will one day reach the age where they will be part of the decisions that shape future societies, just as today’s decision-makers are shaping the future today’s students will grow up to live in.
“Journalism is important for students because it’s one way students learn to effectively communicate to a mass audience.” Dr. Margaret Kim, principal of Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies, said. For ten years, the school has been offering a journalism class for students to learn the techniques of reporting, interviewing and writing articles. “[The Journalism class] is a tool to teach students how to think critically and form opinions.”
Furthermore, the student reporters can put their learning to practice by joining the school newspaper staff.
“If we make our newspaper appealing to students now at a young age, they will be more likely to be aware of current events when they’re older,” Victoria Velasco, the school paper’s editor-in-chief, explained.
Also, many students may be unaware of the career opportunities available through journalism and media awareness and experience.
“For students who are interested in the field of communication or journalism, it is a good experience to practice journalism, communication and writing,” Dr. Kim advised.
Students gain priceless skills in writing, analyzing, communicating, listening, prioritizing responsibilities, balancing speed and accuracy, and both objective arguing and creative expression. Having a natural tendency to care and be curious are personal traits that help a reporter to succeed. Some students may not realize early on just how much they care about other people and society.
“Students can learn to be more mindful about current events and the world around them through participating in journalism,” Dr. Kim said.
