The annual Irvine High School Performing Arts Showcase will take place Thursday Oct. 18 and Friday Oct. 19 from 7-9 p.m. in the Irvine High theater. Performers will include students in dance, drama, vocal and instrumental music.
This event was started by director of choirs Tina Peterson in 2010 to provide a collaborative effort among all the performing arts and to offer soloist and small group opportunities to students.
“My ultimate goal is to have the students in performing arts departments appreciate and support each other’s arts,” Peterson said. “I also hope this showcase will inspire individuals to audition for solos in the future.”
In the weeks leading up to the event, each choir group worked on songs with a variety of genres ranging from light folk songs to popular music.
“All the vocal groups contributed effort and time to make this showcase audience-friendly and entertaining,” senior and choir member Ashton Davis said. “We do the best we can to make the show as close to perfect as possible.”
Thursday night, the Irvine Singers, Men’s Bass Chorus and Women’s Canta Bella choir will take the stage. Friday night, the Irvine Singers, Women’s Treble Chorus and Chorale will perform. The Irvine High School Theatre Arts Ambassadors will act out an 8-minute mash-up of several plays titled ‘Take the Stage… Leave a Legacy,’ and members of the dance and instrumental departments will present solos and perform in groups on both nights.
“I’m very proud of how hard everyone has worked to put on a high quality performance,” Peterson said. “I hope this event will not only reach out to just the performing arts students and families but also appeal to a broader audience.”
Tickets, $5 for students and $10 for non-students, are sold at the door. All profits made from this showcase will go to support the choir booster, Friends of Vocal Music (FVM).
“This is a once a year opportunity and the audience can expect to have a great time,” theater arts director Danyelle Dunavold said. “There’s a little bit of something for everyone and they can hear wonderful music, see entertaining plays and get a taste of different genres, all in one night.”
