Infinite H made a smooth debut last month with “Fly High,” the duo’s first EP.
A spinoff of the group Infinite, Infinite H is part of the growing “subunit” trend in K-pop. On “Fly High,” Infinite rappers Hoya and Dongwoo set themselves apart with an album that has a completely Hip Hop sound and production from noted hip hop producers like Beenzino, Zion T, and Primary.
The lead single, “Special Girl,” hit #1 on various websites upon release. “Special Girl” is a bright song with a catchy beat that does not have the expected strong vibe of Hip Hop. Featuring guest vocals from Bumkey, the smooth song emphasizes the feelings of a boy in love. Listeners are able to picture the “Special Girl” that the two rappers visualize in their verses.
With songs such as the heavy “Victorious Way” and the mellow “Without U,” the rest of the album shows their confidence in the various styles of Hip Hop. The two members also stick to their Infinite roots, showing gratitude to their fans with the upbeat title track.
In addition to Bumkey, the album has notable contributions from Gaeko (of Dynamic Duo) and fellow Woollim Entertainment artist Baby Soul.
In an interview with Asia Today, Infinite H spoke about the recording process. “Before we started working,” they said, “we were really worried that hip-hop fans would not appreciate the album, but after we began, all of our worries vanished. Working with our amazing hip-hop sunbaenims helped throw away our doubts.”
As part of Infinite, Hoya and Dongwoo continue to turn heads with sold-out concerts and synchronized choreography. Now, this promising subunit gives the Korean music industry a fresh new style.
