North Hollywood High School Science Bowl Team A won their 20th annual regional science bowl competition sponsored by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. The score was 146 for North Hollywood and 18 for Sherman Oaks between the two schools.
The competition was held at the downtown Los Angeles at DWP’s John Ferraro Building on February 25th, 2012. This regional competition is open to all public and private schools within the boundaries of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). The team will receive the Hitachi Scholarship and will represent Los Angeles at the National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C.
Since 1998, North Hollywood team has won 14 titles, as well as a national title in 2001. The Sherman Oaks Center for enriched studies has shown the impression by placing second. North Hollywood Team B placed fourth after Palisades Charter High.
This is how the completion works. Two teams of four students compete to answer various science and math related subjects including Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Astronomy, and Earth Science. Students have to buzz for the answer, like Jeopardy.
The main contribution to the team’s first place is their diligence. Bowl practice is held every Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 7. They hold tryouts once a year in order to select talented and hardworking students at North Hollywood.
Ryan Sherman, a member of the North Hollywood B Team, talked about working hard. “North Hollywood High is a very poor school. We don’t have money to sponsor clubs like Science Bowl and Olympiad. Robotics club don’t have enough supplies to build. However, we work hard. Science Olympiad team holds practices every Mondays and Wednesdays while Bowl practices every Tuesdays and Thursdays. Moreover, our school is very well known for having tough teachers with difficult academic works. Despite of these academic obstacles, we tried hard and placed first and fourth place. This means a lot to us!”
Dani Bork, a senior at North Hollywood and a member of the North Hollywood A team, also talked about the team’s first place title. “I think we deserved this first place title,” he said, “We not only practiced almost every day but also we had fun studying. For me, studying Biology and Physics has been most amazing experience in my life. Moreover, our science teacher, Mr. Maine, always teaches us with great enthusiasm.”
North Hollywood A team will participate in the national Science Bowl competition in Washington, D.C.
Great Story!
