March 7, 2011___The National Science Olympiad Competition brings together teams of students from all around the country from the regional levels to the state levels, leading up to the national tournament.
The competition was started 27 years ago as a simple proposal by a science teacher. It began as the Delaware Science Olympiad and then expanded over the years to become one of the biggest competitions in the nation.
Students are tested on a number of various subjects ranging from pure study-based events such as Microbiology and Astronomy, experiment-based events such as Forensics, and hands-on building events such as Towers and Optics.
The North Hollywood High School Science Olympiad team won the Los Angeles County Regional Science Olympiad held at Occidental College by a margin of seventy-four points competing against 37 teams. The South California Science Olympiad State competition will be held on April 10, 2011 at Canyon High School.
“We really worked hard to get this far,” said Chiyoung Kim, a sophomore at North Hollywood High School. “I don’t think we could have done this without our hard work.”
