On November 21, 2011, the Glen A. Wilson High School girls’ varsity tennis team made history when they won their first ever CIF Southern Section Division V Title.
The team defeated Carpinteria High School 14-4.
Co-captain Megumi Kikuchi, 17, said, “When we won CIF, hugs were exchanged, tears were rolling down, and everyone felt the amazing feeling of winning CIF. I was really proud of my team because this season, our goal was to win CIF and we were able achieve our goal.”
The team was undefeated in the Valle Vista League all season long thanks to their coach Mr. Lai and the countless hours of practices.
Caitlin Lee, 16, said, “We practiced every single day, except on rainy days. We played multiple sets against different players, and conditioned every day after practice. Fridays were the hardest conditioning days. But, every practice was worth it in the end. We just had to have a positive attitude and a strong mentality.”
After their victory, the team celebrated at King Taco, drank apple cider, and took pictures with their plaque. Each player received patches for their letterman jackets.
Upon returning back to school after Thanksgiving break, the student body at Glen A. Wilson High School gathered at the amphitheater during lunch to congratulate the girls’ varsity tennis team for winning CIF, as the song “We are the Champions” boomed loudly in the background.
The school will soon hang up the CIF banner for the tennis team in the gym.
