During spring break, many athletes take the time to condition and train in order to be ready for their upcoming or returning season of sports. Many athletes run practice drills over the break, or even look for competitive pick-up games at nearby parks and schools. If so, Gahr High school might be just the place to visit.
On April 3, the first game of the Spring League basketball tournament was hosted by Gahr High school. The Spring League tournament is provided by Gahr High school, with its own basketball team playing in the tournament. It consists of six different schools – Lakewood, Los Alamitos, Canyon, Bell Gardens, Whitney, and Gahr High participating in the tournament. Games are held every Monday from April 3 to May 21, with the first games starting at 5:30 p.m. Junior varsity, varsity, or teams consisting of both junior varsity and varsity players mixed together participate in the tournament.
“I’m really appreciative and glad that Gahr is hosting this tournament, because not many schools will allow and take the time to host a tournament during a time when everyone wants to rest and catch up on some sleep,” said Ruben Guerrero, varsity basketball head coach of Whitney High school. “It also gives some of my players a chance to improve on their game that they had been away from since season ended, and see where they’re at in terms of their skill level.”
The tournament not only gives players fun games, but also provides entertainment for many parents and siblings who want to watch local sports.
“As a fan of basketball, I really enjoy the action from the games that give me something to do over the break,” said Jongwon Han, sophomore at Eastside Christian High. “Especially because the NCAA tournament is over, this is kind of like a continuation of additional basketball to watch for me. It’s basketball at its best.”
The games continue to attract a lot of interest and attention, with seats filling up courtside for each game that is played. Gahr has already hosted numerous tournaments before, and quoting Jongwon Han, will be providing more ‘basketball at its best.’
