Recently, there have been many natural disasters devastating different regions of the United States. One of them, Hurricane Harvey, has severely affected Houston, Texas, devastating local wildlife, buildings, houses, and cars. It has been estimated that the hurricane will cost Texas $25 to $35 billion in damages. Since the hurricane, many people around the U.S. have joined to donate money and supplies to support the victims affected by this natural disaster.
Academy of the Canyons, also known as AOC, is a middle college high school with a small population of 400 students. These students wanted to raise money to help the victims during this hard time and decided to hold a one day fundraiser with a goal of raising $1,000. The money was going to Global Giving, a nonprofit organization that held a Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund.
On September 8th, AOC’s ASB set up big posters, tables, and a music system that blared upbeat music near the valet line at the front of the school. There, many of the ASB students were lined up along the valet line, holding colorful buckets that said “Place hope here.”
Throughout the day, many parents and students gladly donated checks and cash for the fundraiser. Ice cream was also sold for $2 during lunch for the fundraiser, and hundreds of excited students and staff lined up during the hot, summer day to buy the ice cold treat. That Friday was filled with positive vibes, and many parents and students left the school feeling joyful to help such a wonderful cause.
In the end, AOC raised over $3,000, which was three times their original goal. Because of the urgency of the situation that affected millions of people in Texas, many people felt more compassionate and compelled to donate and help out. Not only did this fundraiser help Hurricane Harvey victims, but it also brought the school and the students together into one big family.
