At South Pasadena High School, Friday, Oct 5 was Color Day. Students dressed in school colors orange and black to show school pride on the first league football game of the season.
Of the several school-wide events at SPHS, Color Day boasts the greatest student participation. Though the simple theme is to wear orange and black (the school mascot is the tiger), numerous students go beyond wearing just orange shirts and black shorts. Since Color Day always falls in the month of October, students celebrate Color Day like Halloween, dressing up in costumes. This year was no different.
Students dressed up as members of a circus, softball team, as superheroes, and as cupcakes. All of these costumes were nearly if not completely orange and black in color. Some even went as far as to paint the faces and hair with orange paint.
“The costumes were creative and everyone was really spirited,” said junior Elliot Davis.
School spirit was at its peak during the assembly. Students were separated by grade level and given signs with their respective graduation years on one side and letters on the reverse. As last year, the assembly began as the freshmen yelled “S”, the sophomores “P”, the juniors “H”, and the seniors “S” to spell out “SPHS.”
By the end of the day, students felt both pride for their respective classes as well as a sense of belonging as members of the SPHS community. Seniors cherished the memories of their last Color Day while underclassmen looked forward to next year’s Color Day.
