Community. A show following seven students, all with their own quirks and idiosyncrasies, attending Greendale Community College is one of the best shows in primetime television.
Jeff Winger (Joe McHale). A self-obsessed former lawyer who attends community college to get a real degree. Britta Perry (Gillian Jacobs). A former activist trying to find what she wants to do in life. Abed Nadir (Danny Pudi). A TV-and-movie-obsessed student who is also very socially inept. Shirley Bennett (Yvette Nicole Brown). A mother and a devout Christian, going to college to try to start a brownie business. Annie Edison (Alison Brie). A smart student who dropped out of high school because of an Adderall addiction. Troy Barnes (Donald Glover). A former high school football star. Pierce Hawthorne (Chevy Chase). A rich, bigoted old man who attended Greendale for over ten years because he was bored. These character create a unique and odd group that manages to become friends because of a fake study group.
The show follows the group as they experience “college life;” their escapades lead them to study Spanish under the guidance of Senor Chang (Ken Jeong), turn into clay figures of themselves, wage war with paintball guns, and even more. The show uses meta-humor (humor about humor) and parodies movie and television situations. With a great cast and perfectly timed jokes, punch-lines, and remarks, this show is what every comedy show aspires to be.
Creator Ben Harmon made this show based on his life experience; he was in a study group at Glendale Community College and took Spanish with his girlfriend and then became involved in a study group.
Currently in its fourth season, Community will be without Ben Harmon. How will it fare without its original creator? We’ll find out Oct. 19.
