The La Canada High School Band held its first Goodwill fundraiser on December 2. In the drizzling rain, the band collected used clothes and other objects to send to Goodwill Southern California.
The money raised will be used to buy new drums for the marching band. The band’s objective was to raise $4,000 through the fundraiser. They filled two truckloads of donations and raised $2100. So far, the band has raised $1100 in parent donations and merchandise sales for the $1500 drums.
The idea came to band director Mr. Stone when he received a card from Goodwill asking for donations. After suggesting the idea to the band leadership council, the band accepted the proposal as a good way to give to charity and get rid of unused items while raising funds.
“Usually, these fundraisers require parents to buy stuff or parents to donate money,” Stone said. “So instead of having parents give us money, we thought we would do something that would help parents keep their money while getting rid of their unneeded stuff.”
Given the success of the event, the band plans to keep the fundraiser is a tradition for years to come.
“This was a really great idea,” stated sophomore Gavin Hyun. “It was both an easy and fun way to raise funds while still giving to the community in time for Christmas.”
