President Trump has officially signed the executive order, banning transgender people from being recruited into the U.S. military. Although Trump announced this over a month ago, he recently signed the directive to officially enforce his announcement. It is unclear whether current transgender military personnel people will be allowed to continue to serve in the military.
President Trump has stated in his 2016 campaign that he would fight for the LGBT Americans, but the White House official who gave a brief report about the new policy, has denied the action of banning transgender people from the military as an act of discrimination. Trump’s announcement on Twitter in July took Americans by surprise, including the joint chiefs of staff in the military. President Trump has stated, “Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.”
The White House has not yet decided on how the new policy will be implemented, leaving the transgender currently serving the U.S. questioning their future. Trump’s new policy has reversed the approval by the Defense Department under President Obama, which allowed transgender people to serve in the U.S. military.
Trump’s new policy was met with widespread criticism by both the Left and Right as well as civil rights advocates. Some have argued that the years of progress for LGBT rights are being destroyed by Trump’s new policy, and studies show that letting transgenders serve the U.S. has had “minimal impact” on the military.
Not only does Trump’s new policy prohibit transgender from serving the U.S., but it also prevents funding for gender reassignment surgeries, except only when to protect the individual who has already started a course of treatment. Justin Kim, shared his thoughts on Trump’s new military ban. “Personally, I don’t see why transgenders should be banned from the military. People argue that transgender operations in the military take up a lot of money, but I believe that it takes up only about $8 million dollars according to the news. If they want to serve, they should serve.”
In a time where many individuals are willing to give up their lives for their country, President Trump’s attempt to restrict these individuals may hurt the country that he wants to “protect.”
