Trends, a general direction in which something is developing or changing, are always shifting; whether it be fashion, social media, or hotspots. There are many types of trends nowadays, and due to fast fashion, they are constantly changing.
Fashion-wise, especially for females, there are many different trends that have come up these past years. Fast fashion is a term used to describe fashion trends that are constantly changing. Today, many retro/vintage styles have been brought back. From the ‘60s disco style to the ‘90s oversized grunge, the 2000’s style of combining all retro looks has been coined Y2K fashion. Many old brands are also reappearing, including Fila, Champion, Tommy Hilfiger, and Guess.
Another new popular trend is apps on social media, such as Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, Twitter, Spotify, Soundcloud, Yelp, and Youtube. As technology grows, people are communicating faster than ever and social media is becoming a platform for people all around the world. The increasing trendiness of social media apps is leading to technology addiction, an entirely new problem that generation Z and generation Alpha are probably the first to experience. This addiction has caused the rising generations to start losing interest in school since the algorithm of social media is based on what individuals like, unlike school which is based on a curriculum. This comes to show that not all trends are good for one’s mind or body. Sometimes, not following trends can be the smarter route or path to success. The saying goes, “If your friends jump off a cliff, would you too?”
Another example of trends is locations. For example, many believe that Melrose and Beverly Hills are spots that are hip and have many shopping areas, therefore having a large gathering of teens and stores. Some other places include restaurants, like Lemonade, and stores such as Supreme and Golf. Thankfully, stores and restaurants have a harder time becoming “unpopular”, unlike fashion. However, over a period of time, it is very likely that some of these location trends may die out and new stores and clothing brands will become larger and more successful.
Trends tend to rapidly change based on what the society focuses on and likes at the moment. It is possible that the trends can disappear in a day or stay trendy for tens of years. Although trends are usually what the majority likes, it is important to remember that sometimes trends may not be the best pick.
