Most Americans receive a chill down their spines upon hearing the word “socialism”. Often associated with communism, socialism has received a negative reputation in the United States. Democratic presidential hopeful, Bernie Sanders is a self appointed socialist and his political affiliation has reintroduced socialism into the United States.
Specifically, Sanders identifies as a Democratic Socialist. Democratic Socialists believe in the concept that socialism and democracy should coexist as one political system. Many use the terms socialism and communism interchangeably. However, Democratic Socialism, according to Bernie Sanders, is a method to combat American injustice and corruption, specifically in the economic and social sectors. Democratic Socialism is not limited to the Democratic ideals, rather the liberal aspect of political issues, and upholding them over everything.
Many Capitalist Americans will be reluctant to get rid of the capitalist economy, but according to the provisions stated by the Democratic Socialists of America, the capitalist economy will be maintained, however, the gap between poor and rich will be significantly reduced. Democratic Socialists do not want the federal government to become a notorious regime, rather, to maintain the status quo. Sanders also wishes to add emphasis to health care, immigration reform, prison corruption, racial issues, to create a better experience for the constituency.
