Dating is a sensitive subject for all age groups – including many high school students. Most teenagers in today’s age are open about dating. When students enter high school, many openly look for love, hoping to find “the one.”
The beginnings of relationships are exciting – especially for young high school students in their first relationships. Although most high school relationships usually don’t last long, being in a relationship in high school can be beneficial in many ways.
By going through a relationship, one may learn how to express their feelings clearly, and develop healthy communication skills, which is valuable in one’s high school years, college years, and beyond.
“High school dating can be helpful in learning good communication skills,” said Sharon Kung, a junior at Mission San Jose High School, in an interview with JSR. “Being in a relationship lets you think more about the other person, which makes you become more considerate. That way, you can learn how to communicate with your boyfriend or girlfriend effectively.”
Some argue that although not many high school sweethearts end up in marriage, going through multiple relationships may help one find what they want in their future spouse.
“Going through a relationship allowed me to find out what I want – and don’t want – from my spouse,” added Kung.
While high school dating may be a source of emotional support, one should be aware of the possible downsides. As students, teenagers must focus on learning and discovering what they want to do in the future. Some argue that high school students are not mature enough and are more prone to fail in time management.
“I think high school relationships are good for the short term, satisfying one’s crave for love. However, in the long term, it may not be very beneficial,” said Joycelyn Chan, a freshman in San Francisco State University, in an interview with JSR. “Hanging out with your partner frequently may mean spending less time on academics, and spending less time with your family members. For a fact, not many high school couples last until marriage; it probably may not be the best relationship to invest in – it may only leave your heart broken.”
Relationships in high school may be beneficial or detrimental. The ultimate key to a successful relationship is balance – being able to set time for school, family members, friends, and their partner. Despite conflicting opinions on high school dating, one may be able to have a successful relationship, through dedication and balance.
