On the 14th of October this year, Rose, along with two other men that were considered his co-defendants, was accused of sexually assaulting a woman on a summer morning in 2013. The woman who accused these three men was the victim at the time, according to court. She explained how the men offered her drugs, and how they forced her into having sexual intercourse with them.
Some fans of Derrick Rose were infuriated. Noah Whu, a Diamond Bar resident and an ex-loyal Rose fan, felt extremely irritated after hearing about his idol’s bad deed. Whu explained how he was “ashamed and annoyed” that a person that he had once respected did something “disgraceful”.
Other fans thought differently. Harold Moh, a Rose fan that believed in Rose’s innocence, stated how there could have been a possibility that Rose could have been telling the truth. Also, since the event occurred about 3 years ago, Moh believes the woman’s testimonies could have be made by reconstructive memory.
The citizens of Walnut and Diamond Bar varied with different opinions, sharing their thoughts with family and friends. Most of the community explained how the group of three men just wanted to do it for their own pleasure and never would forgive them. They also mention that Rose should have just not recovered from his injury in 2012. On the other hand, some people say how they think the whole case is false, because the event had occurred a long time ago.
Many athletes in a variety of sports have been accused of sexual assault in the past. Recently in baseball, a Korean Major League Baseball(MLB) player by the name of Jung ho Kang from the Pittsburgh Pirates has also had one of these scandals. He used a dating site to invite a female into his hotel room, and was eventually accused of offering drugs to the woman and having intercourse with her, a similar case to Rose. Therefore, this event has reflected not only the past problems that have taken place, but also has put a new scare into New York basketball.
