Some people’s lives are a lot like what people see in dramas or shows that we watch. The Duchess film was directed in 2008 by Saul Dibb. The film mostly took place in the House of Devonshire, England, which was the house of Devonshire. Georgiana Cavendish, a young woman, married William Cavendish, the Duke of Devonshire, because she thought he actually loved her.
In reality, it was a marriage formed between two houses; also, for the duke to have an heir. Her ‘true lover’, Charles Grey and her friend Bess Foster, who stole her husband, creates a more complicated love story. The main characters and the story of them that were shown in the movie were also accurate.
Even though the film had accurate characters and plots, there were many interesting points that had been left out. The Duchess shows extreme side of men overpowering women, but throughout the film, it explains Georgiana Cavendish’s life as a duchess who went through hard and unexpected moments of marriage.
The film didn’t show much about her actual life as a person, instead it talked more about her love life with the people around her. It would’ve been better if the producers have included more information about Georgiana Cavendish’s outside life as a Duchess of Devonshire. It would have been more historically accurate about her life and informational. Such as her political life, being a political figure of Whigs.
Also, she was a friend of Marie Antoinette, soon to be Queen of France. This would have explained her love of being public, having many parties, and fashion sense. Many critics have shown positive attitudes about the film, saying how it told how much Georgiana Cavendish wanted to be free from the Duke’s possession, but some said that there were not much saying about her actual life.
“The largest section of her biography is actually dedicated to G’s passionate devotion and significant contribution to British politics. Some of her political work is hinted at in the film… Her other accomplishments – she was a talented author, chemist, and mineral scientist! – are completely left out.”(Vail)
Vail, who compared the film and Georgiana Cavendish’s actual life, she thought it should have been more information about her accomplishments. The movie is accurate, showing Georgiana Cavendish’s view of her life.
