On October 5, 2019, I went to see a new Kpop group formed by SM Entertainment: SuperM. The boy band, which has been called “The Avengers of Kpop,” consists not only of new trainees, but also of idols from three current Kpop groups, SHINee, EXO, and NCT. The seven members of SuperM are Taemin, Baekhyun, Kai, Ten, Lucas, Mark, and Taeyong.
The tickets to the concert, which was held at the Capitol Records Tower, were limited but free. Although tickets were needed to enter the concert, the SuperM Village, a small area outside of the Capitol Records Tower where merchandise booths and food vendors were set up, did not require any tickets and was open at 2:00 pm. Everyone who attended the concert received a SuperM light stick and a fan that pictured one of the seven band members.
The performance promptly started at 7:00 pm and ended at around 7:40 pm. SuperM sang a total of three songs out of the five they had in their first mini-album, starting with “I Can’t Stand The Rain.” Next, they sang “Super Car” and finished their performance with their debut song, “Jopping.” Before each song, a video was played, such as the making of their music video. For those who could not attend the concert, there was a live stream on Youtube.
SuperM’s “Jopping” music video reached 8.8 million views on Youtube. It may seem like a lot, but compared to EXO’s ‘Tempo,’ which reached 16.1 million views, it was half the amount. Despite the number of views, ‘Jopping’ was creative in the sense that it delivered a powerful and strong feeling to the audience, and is expected to continue to get more views.
SuperM announced the first ten dates for their North American tour, which will begin in November. The tour will start in Texas, and continue through states such as New York, California, eventually finishing in Canada.
The recent concert in October was a night to remember, and I had such an enjoyable time when I saw SuperM live on the stage. I am looking forward to seeing them again next year on February 2nd, when they will be in Los Angeles. Until then, I will keep playing their album on repeat eagerly awaiting their show.
