March, which includes the beginning of daylight savings time and the change from winter to spring, is a time for brightness and new beginnings! Here are some things to do as you celebrate the sun:
Now Through March 9: California Landscapes Into Abstractions exhibit at the Orange County Museum of Art in Newport Beach. This art exhibition explores the contrasts between the natural landscape painters of the early 20th century and the more modern artists that became prominent after that. See how art evolves in this fascinating exploration. [James Luna, Into the Frail, 1993]
March 2: Singer/Songwriter Open Mic at Kulak’s Woodshed in North Hollywood. Everyone is welcome to submit their name for a chance to play on this legendary stage. Bring an acoustic guitar and perform an original or a cover!
March 8: LACHSA Live at Los Angeles County High School for the Arts in Los Angeles. This all-day arts festival celebrates the many creative activities of LACHSA. Activities include a Shakespearean performance, view student paintings, and a rock concert.
March 9: The Glendale Youth Orchestra at the Alex Theater in Glendale. In addition to performing pieces by Beethoven and Bellini, the orchestra will also perform the live score during a screening of Charlie Chaplin’s “The Rink.” Concertmaster and featured violinist Sarah Worden is a senior at Crescenta Valley High School. March 15: Smart Start Drivers’ Ed at the Valencia Library in Valencia. Held from 10:30 am – 12:30 pm by the California Highway Patrol, this free workshop aims to teach new drivers the responsibilities of the road.
March 20: CalARTS Hip Hop Club Show at Sharon Disney Lund Theater in Valencia. Members of the prestigious college’s Hip Hop Club are putting together a night of dance and live music.
March 21: “Divergent” at Theaters Everywhere. Based on the bestselling novel, the dystopian trilogy that has been gaining popularity since its release in 2011 will now be on the big screen.
March 25: Teen Top High Kick Tour at Nokia Live in Los Angeles. Teen Top, a six-person Korean pop group including three members who are actually teenagers, released its debut album last year and toured Europe and Asia. They come to LA as part of their first worldwide tour.
March 29: Dodgers vs. Angels at Angels Stadium in Anaheim. The Los Angeles Dodgers will travel to Anaheim to face their interleague rivals in a preseason exhibition. Yet the Dodgers will have already played two official games, on March 22 and 23 against the Arizona Diamondbacks, “down under” in Australia.
