There is a lot that goes on your senior year of high school. Stressing through AP classes, extracurriculars, and college applications are the cherry on top of it all. The Senior Board of Van Nuys High School, in collaboration with the ASB, decided to hold the annual senior kickoff on October 20th. After much discussion on the theme of the kickoff, the majority of the students who attended the Senior Board meeting decided on “Color Wars,” inspired by the old Disney Channel Games from our childhood.
In order to foster anticipation and spirit, students were randomly assigned a color by the school roster- either yellow, green, blue, or red. The “Color Wars” were going to be epic so students were highly encouraged to dress up in their assigned colors to show school spirit and to participate in team competitions and all of the other planned events.
On the day of the senior kickoff, many seniors were decked out in their respective colors. Some of the guys even went as far as to wear tutus and leggings to show school spirit. The senior kickoff was held in the football field and students lined up for food and started to enjoy the festivities. Missing 5th and 6th period, some of the seniors performed their pre-rehearsed acts of song, dance, and rap. After those performances, the music switched to songs that everyone could dance to in front of the stage. The students danced the cupid shuffle and freestyled to DJ Khaled, relieving all the stress they had accumulated from just beyond the bleachers.
Once the majority of the students were done eating, the senior board officers began capture the flag and relay races for each team. Capture the flag quickly turned into a body wrestle for the boys, and the girls did not want to participate. Even though no one actually followed the rules, all teams enjoyed watching and cheering for their representative players capturing the flags of other teams and returning them to their base.
After laughing through a couples rounds of capture the flag with no clear winner, the senior officers decided to host a relay race between the teams. The fastest six team members were chosen to represent each team. No one really knows who won the relay race either since all teams started to accuse one another of cheating. Either way, the activities brought joy and laughter to all seniors participating or not.
The students who did not participate in any of the sporting events took this time to catch up with friends, play cards, and take pictures at the photo booth. By the time all of the events were over, the bell rang to dismiss the students from school. All of the seniors left the football field with big smiles on their face and a memory that will last them a lifetime.
