Applications for the Autumn 2015 Semester of the J Student Reporters (JSR) program are due this Monday, June 29. Don’t miss your chance to join a growing community of motivated and talented high school student reporters!
JSR is a multi-faceted program aimed at challenging students to do more than just become good writers. The education department at the Korea Daily has dedicated the past 14 semesters of JSR to developing a curriculum that emphasizes reaching out, speaking out, writing with power, and leadership. The program strives to push even the best student writers to be the best they can be while providing them with the academic freedom to explore their own interests and passions and see their work published in the pages of a large national newspaper.
Students also participate in a revision and review process that includes hands-on interaction with seasoned student editors and an experienced program coordinator who has been working as an educator and professional writer for the past decade. The program has an international base of students, including members from many US states as well as foreign countries including South Korea and Mexico. There are also enriching field trips and workshops available to reporters in the Southern California region.
Another huge benefit of the JSR program is the personal investment that the program coordinator, Geoff Geis, puts into assisting students who demonstrate a desire to excel. Over the past several semesters, Geis has provided numerous opportunities for dedicated students to become involved as interns, and he has also been glad to assist students with college recommendations and applications for summer programs.
Veterans of JSR have been tremendously successful. Students have landed at top universities including Harvard, Princeton, the US Naval Academy, the University of Pennsylvania, Dartmouth, NYU, USC, and more. Many have reported that JSR equipped them with skills to help them succeed at their chosen schools.
