Mr. Beach, the AP Physics teacher at Centennial High School, assigns a boat building project every year for his students and they test it at the school pool. This assignment is to teach students about buoyancy and how the design of the boat changes how much weight each boat can hold before it sinks into the water.
Many students in the class look forward to designing their own boat to compete with others to get the fastest time and hold the most weight. “I find building the boat really fun and I don’t see it as a waste of my time. Yes I do get a lot of other projects since I’m in a lot of IB/AP classes but I genuinely think of the boat as more of an activity than an assignment” said Hao Wang in an interview with JSR.
Another type of project that many teachers opt to assign is a movie-type project. “Since all of my students are done with testing, I give them an assignment to create a movie for everyone to watch on the last day of school” said Mr.Dobyns in an interview with JSR. “Honestly, I think that making an entire movie is going to be a lot of work and will take up a lot of time, but I like projects that I can make up myself and not have everything regulated and pre-made” said Emily Moran in an interview with JSR.
These are not the only type of projects that teachers decide to give, but these projects show the creativity that teachers want their students to use in order to learn more about their significant subjects.
