On Feb. 23, the 23rd Annual Brea 8K Classic took place throughout the city of Brea. The course started off at Brea Mall, led runners through retail districts and neighborhoods, and finally finished at the same location where the race started.
The Brea 8K took place from 8 a.m. until the last of the participants crossed the finished line. The race was open for athletes of all ages ranging from elementary students to seniors.
Runners and walkers were allowed to group up into teams and complete the race together in mini events with prizes determined by whichever teams had the fastest finishing times. The top three finishers from each event were awarded with medals, and Brea’s overall fastest male and female were awarded trophies.
Student volunteers from various high schools and cities came to help out with keeping racers on track and handing out refreshments at the water tables throughout the race.
“I found out about this event through NHS club,” stated Simon Zhou, junior at Canyon High School. “It was my first time there, and seeing all those racers trying their hardest made it worth waking up so early to help out.”
Though it was not required to finish the race, racers gave it their effort to cross the finish line. At the end of the race, each runner received a Brea 8K Classic t-shirt, goodie bags, and the feeling of accomplishment along with plates of food specially provided by local Orange County restaurants.
