Hour of Power is back at Cerritos High School! Hour of Power is an after school tutoring program that is available Monday through Thursday until 3:45. Students can come if they are falling behind in a class, need help with their homework, or even to tutor other students. It is a great way for students to meet other students and socialize as well. “Students come and get tutored in things they need help on. Juniors and Seniors come to help out,” states Ms. Christine Riad, who is in charge of this program. “They also sometimes work in groups.”
“Hour of Power is a great way for students to even get ahead!” Riad explains. As the teacher in charge of this program, Riad has set high goals for Hour of Power for this school year. “I want to help as many students as possible. I want students to learn to work in groups because once they get into college the professors don’t help as much so they need to learn cooperation.” Not only does Riad hope for all this to happen, but also she will make them all happen.
Hour of Power is a tutoring program that came about because Riad realized that tutoring would be a great way for students to get help and stay on track with their classes and grades. “When I got here [at Cerritos High School] I just saw that there was no tutoring after school. I just thought, ‘Man, we got to do this!’”
Hour of Power is not only a program that teachers are impressed with. Students at CHS find the program convenient and fun. “I tutored several times at Hour of Power for my service club, CSF,” explains Cerritos High School student, Irene Hwang, “I think it’s a great program because students are allowed the opportunity to tutor their peers, and the students who are learning feel more comfortable with their peers as well. I am planning on helping out this year as well.”
Because Hour of Power is such a great way for students to meet other students while also helping each other out., many students are looking forward to a new school year with this program, as much as the teachers are. Everyone at Cerritos High School hopes to benefit from this program, whether it is as a teacher, tutor, or student. Let the Hour of Power begin!
