Every Saturday, volunteers meet together to lend support for Sukhee Kang in his campaign for Congress. Volunteers comprise of both students and parents alike, and they have helped with many parts of the campaign, including putting signs on sidewalks and placing pamphlets on the door knobs of many houses.
“I’m really grateful for all the volunteers that came to help with the campaign. Without the help of volunteers, it would be nearly impossible to get all the work done,” said Kang.
Sukhee Kang, the incumbent mayor of Irvine, Calif., announced last June that he was running for Congress as a Democrat, representing the 45th Congressional District, which covers many cities from Anaheim all the way south to Coto de Caza. After being elected as Irvine City Councilmember in 2004 and subsequently mayor of Irvine in 2008, Kang has set out to become the second Korean-American to ever hold a seat in Congress. He will be challenging the three-term Republican John Campbell for this seat.
“It was really fun being able to volunteer with my parent. Even though many of the tasks were tiring, at the end, it was really fulfilling to see what I had done,” said Mike Yim, one of the volunteers of Kang for Congress.
With the June 5th election right around the corner, volunteers for Kang for Congress are trying their best to rally as much support as they can from the community. “Although the tasks we assign volunteers can sometimes be thought to be insignificant, it is important that we try our best to the very end and do all we can to spread awareness,” said Mayor Kang.
“I believe that it was meaningful volunteering together with my son. Whenever I drove, I usually ignored all the signs that were placed on the sidewalks. Also, I paid little attention to what was happening in local politics, but after this volunteer experience, I became more interested in political issues. I feel that I truly learned the meaning behind civic participation,” said Jung Kim, one of the parent volunteers that helped with the campaign.
The June 5th election will narrow down the candidates to the top two, and those two candidates will continue onto the general elections in November of this year.

This is a great story. I wish you could have gotten a quote from Mr. Kang himself, but that would have been understandably difficult. Maybe you could have gone into some of the political stances/views of Mr. Kang and/or his political agenda. Also, it was not really clear as to what Congress seat Mr. Kang was running for – Senate or the House? Overall, strong article.
