Today, we are surrounded by technologies — cell-phones, television, computers, and the Internet. A simple text message to a friend or entering a query on a search bar seems to be a popular method of retrieving information.
Like text messaging or using search bars, social networking sites have become the norm over the past several years, a common media technology that allows for effective communication. The convenience and ease of displaying information have led to wide publicity of the information of its users.
Cory Pan, a senior of Chaparral High School voices his concerns regarding the publicity of social networking sites. “I tend to be conservative with my information due to the overwhelming publicity and how information gets around.” He also states, “However, it is a great took that allow information to be transmitted rapidly.”
Rodney Feddema describes the behavior of many who are a part of the social network. “Most of the time I use Facebook while I’m doing homework on my computer, so I always get distracted by notifications. Eventually I would have to shut it off to get work done.”
However, Rodney argues he isn’t “consumed” by the social network. “I would say that the people that become consumed by it aren’t doing anything important with their lives anyway or else they wouldn’t use it so much, so it really isn’t Facebook’s fault”.
Andy Moon, another Chaparral High School student says he tries to stay away from the social network. “When I have important tests, I stay away from Facebook. However, when I forget about homework or have any questions, I can always utilize the network for clarification.”
Not only do students use social networks used to talk to friends and share pictures, but many students also utilize the publicity that these websites for advertisement and promotion.
Lead singer and guitarist of the Bakersfield band Terra Alive, Andres Aparicio says he uses Facebook to promote his band. “I’ve found this site helpful with promoting our local shows. The ability to send personal invitations and the Facebook Wall is more likely to catch someone’s attention.”
Jack Strutz, a high school senior of Chaparral High School is a photographer and finds Facebook particularly useful in advertising his work. “I’ve gotten several gigs from Facebook. People are able to see my work uploaded on the site, and then have approached me, asking if I would shoot them as well.”
Many students find that the benefits of the social network outweigh the negative aspects. It is an effective tool for many to stay in touch with friends and family, communicate, share pictures and comments, send event invitations, advertise, and much more. Clearly, there are many distractions. However, the user has his or her discretion.
