On March 12 and March 15, the Young Leaders of Orange County (YLOC) tutoring group received a Certificate of Commendation from the City of Buena Park, and a Certificate of Recognition from California state Sen. Lou Correa of District 34.
“I think it’s great that we really received these awards as a whole,” said Isaac Kwon, an eighth grader at Tetzlaff Middle School, teacher-assistant of YLOC. “This wasn’t one or two of us that did something, this was the whole group, and I think that makes it a lot more special.”
The awards were both presented to representatives Helen Youn and Ruth Oh of the YLOC group through Buena Park City Council members Miller Oh and Fred Smith.
“I’m truly grateful for receiving these awards and hope that it will motivate everyone to keep working hard to continue serving the community,” said Stephanie Youn, sophomore at Sonora High School, president of YLOC
The YLOC tutoring group consists of about 30 members, ranging from ninth to eleventh-grade, that tutor a total of more than 100 children every Saturday at the Buena Park City Hall and Police Department. Students ranging from the third to eighth-grade are all tutored in math. There are two separate sessions; one from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and the other from 3:15 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.
YLOC is also participating in a Spring Eggstravaganza event on Saturday, April 7, at Boisseranc Park in Buena Park. This event starts at 8 a.m., and includes a pancake breakfast, petting zoo, moonbounce, field games, spring crafts, and stage entertainment. YLOC members will be supervising as well as helping out with setting up and putting on the events and activities.
“The way this program is heading is really wonderful,” said Hyun Shin, a parent of a YLOC tutor. “The recognition it has received is overwhelming. I felt they really deserved the awards they got because of their participation in the community in activities such as the Easter event in April.”
The YLOC group will be having multiple more events and activities in the summer, and will be moving to a bigger location for tutoring sessions as a result of the constant signups of students that are registering for the program.
