High schools are run by many people, with student leadership and government being very important, since students know what students need the most. At Sunset High School, you can see lots of posters that include information about blood drives, mental health, clubs, and other school events. So, who makes those and why?
Sunset High School has various committees divided so each group can effectively work on events: Secretary and Treasurer, art and design, dance, assembly, and wellness are among those. Even though they are divided into different committees, each group always works together for one goal. For example, when the dance committee decides on a theme, then the assembly committee can plan, and the art committee can design tickets and posters. Furthermore, for school decoration, all of the student government and leadership join and work together for the best quality.
Before school started, some committees had a few jobs, such as to creating a welcoming atmosphere for freshmen and returning students by painting posters. They wrote out upcoming school events such as sports games and homecoming. They also, at the back wall of the cafeteria where everyone will be able to see, painted the phrase “Unstoppable together.”
As school started, the student government’s focus shifted to the homecoming dance, which will be one of the big events of the year. Since last year’s homecoming was canceled due to Covid 19, they are trying their best in order to give memorable moments of high school to students. This year’s homecoming theme is wild west and the art and design committee is now finished with their tickets, posters, and ball wall design.
Furthermore, along with getting the experience of leading school events, by joining student government, students can learn small but valuable lessons. For example, during their retreat, under the idea of “You cannot hate someone once you get to know them,” everyone got an opportunity to say something about themselves, which became a chance to understand other people and get closer. Also, members learned about empathy. In order to show empathy, they found out it is important to be curious and ask questions first so they can know about other’s current situations and take care of them.
Engaging in school events as participants or leaders gives chances and opportunities that cannot be replaced or earned in later life, so it is encouraged for them to be part of school as much as possible!
