When reminiscing about high school, the first things that may come to mind may be loads of homework, projects, and tests that called for early morning and late night studying. To make up for these difficulties, positive experiences like homecoming can patch up high school life into a more enjoyable one.
Homecoming is a high school dance that takes place every year for all grade levels. At Northview High School, homecoming was canceled in the 2020 and 2021 school year due to Covid-19, which was a big disappointment for many students. This year, however, school finally reopened and the first dance was held since Covid-19’s outbreak.
The dance is easily one of the main highlights of the year. The school plans themes and music, class council members decorate the hallways, and students plan to dress up with their fellow classmates. The theme for this year’s dance is called Through the Decades. Each grade level is assigned a decade to dress up as, starting from the 1950s-1960s for freshmen to 2010s-2020s for seniors. Class council members, elected leaders from each grade, paint the windows according to the theme and hang paintings they made together in the hallways. Students can feel excitement buzz in the air as the entire school is decorated into a colorful mass of festivity.
During the week of homecoming, students can enjoy activities each day during lunch. They can sing karaoke, have a breakfast food eating competition, play jeopardy, and have pajama day. There is also a pep rally the day before homecoming, which brings all the students together in the gym and encourages them to feel a surge in school spirit. Students wear the color of their class and can cheer for the basketball teams when they battle each other, watch the cheerleaders’ performances, and support each grade’s homecoming queens and kings. In addition, the band’s percussion members march through the school hallways the week of homecoming and play upbeat, powerful music to excite the students.
Although students may be busy with assessments and homework, homecoming should be the one day they allow themselves to relax and spend more time with friends. It increases school pride, helps people meet new friends, and becomes an opportunity for students to make more happy memories of their youth.
