In the deep, dark countryside of South Korea, many furry friends are facing mistreatment by cruel, money-driven individuals. Yet, many kind-hearted animal supporters around the world are adopting these homeless pets from across the ocean, to give permanent hospitality.
Many non-profit organizations and social media groups – such as Korean Paws Rescue, Furever Together, and Julycoco&Tgunyhouse – have been working together to hunt down abandoned pets and meat farms to rescue animals from harm’s way. These friendly animals have been either pondering around from neighborhood to neighborhood or trapped in cramped cages stacked on top of each other. These networks of rescue teams around the world are providing medical care and temporary sanitized facilities for these pets to be ready and transferred to a caring owner. Supporters around the world help transport these pets to different locations, even across international waters, to be delivered to their new owner that will provide hospitality.
“I believe that people should adopt rather than buy pets,” Pet Owner James K. said. While store bought pets are from puppy mills – where pets (usually dogs) are bred for the main purpose of profit – pets up for adoption are saved from pet farms and abusive owners. Usually, store bought pets are easier to train and take care of, since they have not faced mistreatment in their early life; however, many pets up for adoption have come from an unhealthy environment, where they may have been traumatized.
“Since COVID-19 started, people who are forced to stay home all day are adopting pets from the international and local shelters to provide company,” Pet Adopter Sam B. said. The Coronavirus pandemic has been a great turning point for many families and individuals. People, including working professionals and students, have been forced to work and learn online from home. Recently, many companies and school districts, specifically in states that are COVID-19 hotspots, have come to the conclusion that everyone must continue to work and learn from home with limited interactivity with other people. With the company of dogs and cats, pet lovers can relieve stress from work, homework, and being alone and potentially reduce any unnecessary social contact with other people.
