Antidote International, a non-profit humanitarian club in Cerritos High School, hosted its seventh annual “Rock for Relief” on Friday, Feb. 10, from 6:30-9p.m. at the Brewer Theater. This year’s benefit concert was centered on the theme of education inAfricaand all the proceeds raised at the event, will be donated to The Supply Education. Tickets were sold for $7 from any officer or member and $10 at the door.
This year, with the increasing problems posed by the lack of education, Antidote International decided to support The Supply Education, a non-profit organization that aims to build a secondary school in a slum village inLenana,Kenya. The club hoped to further the understanding of the students about the effects of this issue and show them ways they can take action to help the less fortunate children.
Antidote International also invited several local bands and YouTube stars in order to entertain the audience during this informative event. This year’s performers included Alexa Yoshimoto, Kevin Lien, Nessa Rica Ramos, and Krystle Tugadi. Students were able to meet and greet the performers after the event and also supported them by buying their merchandise.
“Booking artists was really stressful and time consuming but I feel like it was all worth it,” said Public Relations Nancy Kim. “We really hope that this year’s Rock for Relief is successful and that all our hard work pays off.”
Since last summer, the Antidote International officers have been planning, writing scripts, booking bands, and contacting The Supply Education in order to make Rock for Relief as prepared as possible.
Presidents Mary Anne Choi and Nita Kim had also met with the founder and directors of The Supply Education over the summer vacation to discuss more about the education crisis inAfrica. They were able to see in what ways Antidote International could support their organization. Earlier in the school year, Antidote International had also supported The Supply through their “Lunch for Lenana” campaign, in which students gave up their lunch and donated their lunch money for the fundraiser.
“During the summer, we had an opportunity to meet with the executive board for the Supply Education Group, which is the organization we are going to be sponsoring. It was admiring how they turned their Ivy-League education into tools of altruism,” said Kim.
“While preparing for Rock for Relief, we were able to work with a Non-Governmental Organization which was truly a wonderful experience,” said Choi. “Through this collaboration, I hope that we can support The Supply in accomplishing their goal of building a secondary school in Lenana.”
After months of preparation, Antidote International was able to successfully deliver the important message of education to the students and show how the students of CHS can take action in supporting education inAfrica.
