Fans of the professional basketball team Los Angeles Lakers were shouting with joy when one of the best players in the NBA, Lebron James, announced that he would be joining the team on a four year, $154 million dollar contract.
According to the Washington Post, this would be the “longest contract he has signed anywhere since joining the Miami Heats in 2010,” which was eight years ago. The Lakers are one of the most successful franchises in the NBA, but have failed to succeed over the past few years. Since then, many Lakers fans have been waiting for a comeback; LeBron may perhaps be that chance.
However, it may take a while for many Lakers fans to root for LeBron James because both LeBron fans and Kobe Bryant fans have been arguing about which NBA player is better, but the change has been significant to many. I interviewed many people about their thoughts on the shift, and 85% of the people I interviewed were happy with LeBron’s contract.
One fan of the Lakers, Karen P., said, “I am satisfied with the change. I hope that we will continue to show our talent just like we did when the legends Kobe Bryant and Magic Johnson were on the team.” Nichole K., another fan of the Los Angeles Lakers said, “I hope the iconic Lakers can come back better than ever. I know we will bring more victories, and I hope we will continue to spread our Lakers pride.”
Not only has fans been talking about the shift, but many celebrities and NBA basketball players have been happy with the outcome of LeBron James’ move into the Los Angeles Lakers. Kobe Bryant, who has retired from the Los Angeles Lakers in 2016, tweeted “Welcome to the family @KingJames #lakers4life #striveforgreatness @JeanieBuss @MagicJohnson and RP well done!!!” showing that he was glad to see LeBron James join the team.
Chris Ryan said, “This might be bad for Cleveland, bad for the Eastern Conference, and, if Kawhi arrives behind James, bad for competitive balance. But make no mistake: It is very, very good for the NBA’s business. One of its marquee franchises now employs the marquee player. You cannot quantify how important that is.” Although this signing was unexpected, many fans are excited for the outcome and cannot wait for the upcoming season.
