One thousand five hundred fifty seats are filled and in each seat an audience member patiently awaits for the start of the show. Within an instant, cheering rumbles through the John Wayne Performing Arts Center as the lights dim and the heavy curtains slowly move off the stage. The audience is silent as a spotlight hits the stage revealing Glendale High School’s lively performers notorious for their achievement in national competitions.
“Start spreading the news..” The show has officially begun! Dancers run on and off stage wearing a variety of costumes showcasing their choreography to a multitude of songs. The theme for this dance show is a trip all around the world that begins in New York. From dancing to traditional Armenian Music to dancing to a Pacific Island themed song, the dancers give a taste of different cultures around the world.
The different styles and dance teams intrigue the audience with their own twist on traveling as each team performs. The drill, medley, military, solo, and all male dances rock the stage receiving shouts and screams after each act. However, unlike a typical Glendale High School show, this one is different from the others with a surprise guest performance from Crescenta Valley High School. The director and teacher of CVHS’s Dance team, Yana Karibyan shared her thoughts and revealed in an interview, “Crescenta Valley Dance did a great job at the show. They were thrilled for the opportunity and that was evident through their energy on the stage. They have been working very hard – hours on end, not only learning and perfecting the choreography but understanding the art of performance.”
Performer Seoyeon Hong shared, “It was truly a thrilling experience! I was very nervous at first but I think the whole team was able to showcase all our hard work. The tireless effort was worth it in the end!”
Both Glendale High School and Crescenta Valley High School will be holding dance shows later this school year. We look forward to the new choreographies and lyrical pieces to come!
