Currently in the process of being built, a wellness room is opening up for students at Academy of the Canyons, or AOC. The students in AOC do not get to experience a normal high school experience like other students do. From freshman to senior year, the students are required to take multiple college classes such as Psychology, Counseling, Math, History of Animation and many more. Some classes are held in the early morning, during lunch, and even go on after 6pm.
With all the hard classes that require a heavy amount of time for studying and homework, the students get little to no sleep everyday. Susan Chamling, a sophomore at Academy of the Canyons, stated that “most of the school week, I often fall asleep in class or take naps in the afternoon. Although this provides a bit of relief for my sleep deprivation, it causes me to fall behind in my homework once I am at home. Currently, I am taking a college precalculus class that demands vigorous studying and work ethic. One time, I had a test the next morning at around 6:40. However, that day, I had to stay at school until 5 due to my parent’s work schedules. In order to complete the four sections of math homework and preparations for the test, I stayed up all night studying getting only 13 minutes of sleep.”
Many students reported to be sleeping less than 5 hours a day and have a problem of sleeping in class. Therefore, the wellness club is in the process of making the wellness room for students to relieve their stress and get more rest. Every student is allowed to take part in developing the room by attending meetings at lunch and taking surveys on what should be put in the room. The club members are considering putting beds, couches, coloring books, games, books and more to give the students a lounge to rest in.
The wellness club will give students a place to rest and feel comfortable while they are at school. Academy of the Canyons is taking action to help their students succeed and have a pleasant experience going to school.
