When reading a gloomy story or watching a horror movie, one thinks about darkness. Many people associate negative feelings with darkness; however, in reality, darkness is a necessity. Living in a busy, highly technologized society, most people utilize artificial light and experience very little natural darkness. For those who don’t know why we need darkness – well, here’s why.
Experiencing too little darkness can be a significant health risk. In a 2001 study in Seattle, researchers took 800 women who worked in the graveyard shift and found that sixty percent of the women were at risk for breast cancer.
Surprisingly, breast cancer isn’t the only cancer that can occur if one doesn’t get enough darkness. A lack of darkness can cause heart disease, stomach ulcers, and depression. This may sound like something that is not important, however, if one wants to survive this competitive society and become successful or happy, one needs to be healthy. If people don’t get enough natural darkness, there’s a high health risk which could eventually lead to death.
What is more surprising is that people aren’t aware of the dangers of too little darkness. It is very important because darkness also helps with sleep. Everyday people complain of being tired or being sleepy and that is usually because people don’t get enough sleep. This lack of rest can be because people are on their smartphones or tablets too much meaning they are exposed to too much artificial light. In the end, the more darkness one gets, the more sleep one gets and the deeper one sleeps.
Even though one may live a busy life, one should take some time to relax in some form of natural darkness. Ultimately, one’s health is more important than success.
