The ARML is a National League that anyone interested can participate in. [Source: arml.com]On June 2 and 3, the Southern California ARML team competed in the 42nd Annual American Regions Mathematics League at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The four SoCal ARML teams consisted of 60 students throughout Southern California; from North Hollywood in the north to Irvine in the south. The competition encourages students to explore various topics in mathematics not taught in the school curriculum, including counting and probability to number theory and many more.
The competition consists of a Team Round, a Power Round (a proof based exam), an Individual Round, and a Relay Round. After the relay round, participants with the highest scores in the individual round participated in a tie-breaker round to determine the winner. Two members of the SoCal ARML team, Benjamin Chen from Diamond Bar High School and Anivrit Subramaniam from University High School, received a score of 9, qualifying for the tie-breaker round. However, neither of them were able to place in the top 20 in the nation.

The winner of the A division was SFBA/Northern California A1, followed by Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology A1 and Chicago A1. SoCal A1 ended up 15th place in the nation.
The SoCal ARML team practices approximately once a month on Saturdays. The meetings are held on the campus of California State University, Long Beach from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Lauren Yu has been part of the JSR program since Fall Semester 2013 as a continuing reporter. As a senior at Van Nuys High School, Lauren is an Assistant Financial Editor for her school’s newspaper, The Mirror. She takes advantage of the freedom of speech in order to provide factual writing. She hopes to learn the numerous different aspects of journalism as she experiences and progresses within the program
