What is big data? Big data, as defined by Dictionary.com, are “data sets, typically containing billions and trillions of records…” However, the importance of big data doesn’t come from the data itself, but rather how the data is utilized. Data around the world can be accumulated and be used to create innovations such as Google Maps, or even use software to predict certain risks. As technology progresses, the use of big data will be vital in providing information that we all need and will affect everyone one way or another.

Big data can be utilized in numerous ways and can even be an asset to the smallest businesses in the world. According to Forbes, “If the business has a website, a social media presence, accepts credit cards etc., even a one-person shop has data it can collect on its customers, its user experience, web traffic, and more.” This data can be used to improve businesses and the experience.

Big data is also crucial to large industries, such as the sports industry. For example, the company Zebrais joining with the NFL to provide next-gen stats for players, coaches, and fans. This data is accumulated by an RFID chip on the player’s left shoulder pad, and can calculate the player’s distance, speed, acceleration, position, etc. This provides a more statistical approach to the game, and can help teams ultimately win the Super Bowl.

Big data can even affect students and teachers, as it is finding a role in education. According to Knewton.com, big data can determine the intangibles of a student, such as the student’s distractions, proficiency, and forgetfulness. Big data has already begun to impact education, and people in the field must utilize the benefits it has to offer.

As we have an inclination towards using more technology, the use of big data will be inevitable. Whether in a small business, or even a whole industry, big data is an invaluable resource for introducing innovative tools to the world.
