A Peek into Korean Winter Activities

Winters in Korea are known to be harsh, but there are plenty of things to do during winter. Festivals, performances and events abound across the country despite plunging temperatures.

You can also stay in the warm indoors while enjoying some music. From markets to ice sculptures, sunrise festivals to sledding, there are plenty of things to do in the winter.

Hwacheon Mountain Trout Festival and Mt. Taebaek Snow Festival in Gangwon-do

Hwacheon Mountain Trout Festival is great for enjoying nature. It is one of the grandest fishing festivals in the country. “The ice is tested for safety,” said festival director Yong-man Park according to CNN. “It’s more than 40 centimeters thick, so there is no danger of it melting or cracking.”  Aside from many snow activities, you can also go ice fishing and bare hand fishing.

Mt.Taebaek Snow Festival is wonderful to enjoy on-snow and ice events for all ages. Likewise, you get to see wonderful snow sculptures and the breathtaking Taebaeksan mountain.

For a county that’s 70 percent mountain, skiing is a way to take advantage of the landscape when the weather is freezing.

“We have eleven slopes, and can confidently say that in terms of surface area, we are also the biggest ski resort in the Seoul area,” said public relations chief Jeong-hoon Lee, according to CNN.

Walk through a bed of illuminated roses at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza. It’s going to be the perfect way to end (or start!) the all-night shopping marathon in the area.
