A magnitude of 5.8 earthquake shook much of South Korea shortly after 8:30 p.m, which had been preceded by a magnitude 5.1 tremor at 7:44 p.m in Gyeongju, 230 miles southeast of Seoul, just 45 minutes previously.
When the 5.8 earthquake was occurring, most of the high school students were in the middle of their night class at school. However, some schools did not notice earthquake evacuation of the students.
Even one of the high schools in Pohang texted the parents the following message, “presently, your children are safe, so the night class is going to be ended at the same time as usual, ” a student said just after the first earthquake,
When the 5.8 earthquake occurred, the school belatedly sent the following message “because of repeated earthquakes, the students are safely evacuating to the playground.” Moreover, it added, “we will give you the message about the time the students will go home.”
In addition, another high school in Pohang was known to announce that the students should stay in the class. But, they did not follow the announcement and evacuated into playground. “we can not trust the direction of the school to be seated in the class after the tragedy of Sewol ferry.” the students explained the reason why they didn’t stay in the class.
Experts are now warning that recent earthquakes in nearby Japan have destabilized fault lines in Korea, adding fuel to fears that the peninsula is no longer a “safe zone.”
