This program, sponsored in part by the Friends of Santa Clarita Public Library, encourages readers to appreciate literature and music through various programs including story times, guitar design workshop, dance classes, musical performances, and more. Also, by registering, participants are able to set their personal reading goals, leave their book reviews, and track their progress throughout the summer.
One of many programs newly introduced to this year’s Summer Reading Program is the Five Book Summer Challenge, which encourages children and adults to read five books this summer. Children grades first through sixth who complete the challenge will receive a free book from Barnes and Noble, and all who complete the challenge from other age groups will be entered to win prizes, such as recorders, flutes, acoustic guitars, and Amazon gift cards.
To accommodate the many families that participate in the Summer Reading Program, certain events will be held off-site. These “Rhythm ‘Round the City” events include “Wild Wonders presents Jungle Boogie,” set for June 22 at Golden Valley High School, and “Rusty presents Let’s Go Save the Butterflies,” set for July 17 at West Ranch High School.
To make this program successful, many student volunteers are involved to help residents register and get involved in the many of the programs offered.
During an interview with JSR, Shazreh Hassan, a senior at West Ranch High School, said, “I think this program is great because it provides an easy way for the community to come together and have fun even for those young readers.”
Many participants found this program valuable, allowing their summer vacation to become time to read books that they wanted to and get prizes for reading.
Michelle Dejesus, a sophomore at Hart High School told JSR, “This is my first time participating in the Summer Reading Program and I find it fun and enjoyable. I think Summer Reading Program really motivates kids to read during summer and makes their trips to the library something that they can look forward to.”
